The “After the Broken Heart
Series” of pendants grew from a
piece that was commissioned as
a retirement present. That
resulted in the “Heart of Gold”
pin, and the idea for the design
lingered in my head. When I
started After the Broken Heart, I
only knew that I wanted to do a
series of three, heart-shaped
pieces. After that, nothing stayed
the way I originally envisioned it.
That’s what is both fun and
frustrating about making art
jewelry. You get to be part of the
evolution of a concept as it
becomes a real piece of jewelry.
On the other hand, that original
idea, the one that morphed?
Well, that’s probably still
somewhere in your head, floating
around unexpressed …
This series is about how a heart
can heal and maybe even
become stronger after it is
broken. It is about rebirth (see
that golden lotus flower in #3 –
the lotus is a symbol of rebirth.)
In each piece, I tried to use
color, shape and texture to show
the changes along the way as the
heart mends. No matter how
fragmented, all of the pieces
have flowers incorporated into
their design, and there is gold in
each one as well. In the last
piece, I have fused 24K gold (a
Korean process called Keum Boo,
and pronounced “Come Bow”) to
the lotus flowers on both front
and back. It seemed to me that
the golden flower expressed the
joy of feeling whole and healthy
again, and the pale pink resin
that is inlaid in the back of the
piece is a peaceful color. The
third piece is also slightly larger
than the other two, again subtly
reflecting how trouble, sorrow
and trauma can lead to growth.
All of the After the Broken Heart
Pieces are constructed by means
of spacer rivets to give them
depth and dimension. They are
made of sterling, anodized
aluminum, 24K gold and tinted
resin. Each is designed to be
hung from a sterling cable
neckwire.
